Introduction

Scientific name - Furcifer pardalis
Common name - Panther chameleon
Natural habitat - Madagascar

Panther chameleons are indigenous to Madagascar, it is the world’s fourth biggest island and is located off the South East coast of Africa. Panther chameleons are found mainly on the northern and eastern regions as well as some of the neighbouring islands. (See locales page). The males of the species are extremely colourful and vary dramatically in colour and pattern dependant on the geographical location in which they are found.

These different colour forms are referred to as “locales”. Females however are very uniform in colouration and it is much more difficult to distinguish between the locales. Females of all locales are usually brown, grey, orange or peach and occasionally small amounts of purple, green, or pink can be seen on the cheeks or body when the female becomes receptive to courting males.

Panther chameleons are a medium to large sized chameleon and adult males can attain lengths of over 20 inches, females of the species are generally much smaller and rarely grow bigger than 10-12 inches. A panther chameleon’s lifespan in captivity can be 4 to 7 years for males and 2 to 4 years for females. In the wild however this is dramatically reduced and females can be lucky to make it to their second breeding season. This is mainly due to the stresses and strains of breeding, territorial disputes and predation.

Their independently rotating eyes, prehensile tails, striking colour and extendable tongues that catch prey with lightning speed make them a popular and fascinating pet to keep. Now we would not class the panther chameleon to be the easiest of reptiles to keep (when compared to other commonly kept reptiles like bearded dragons and leopard geckos etc) and they do have very specific needs when caging and hydration is concerned, but if these basic requirements are fully understood and met and you take the time to research the needs of your future pet they can be rewarding and long lived animals.
